Gesture Drawing of Figure

Gesture drawing is a type of drawing that gives the essence of the figure without showing details. The artist records the directions of movement and amount of space the figure is taking up. This is a very loose type of drawing. Gesture drawings may be used under a finished drawing in order to set up the composition or as a finished piece.

The following is a youtube video which demonstrates gesture drawing using magazine photos. Since you are at home and you may not have a model available, you may also use photographs.  Watch the video and complete the assignment below.

Complete 7 gesture drawings of a full figure from a magazine or newspaper photograph. Be sure to keep your photographs in order to hand them in with your drawings.

Your drawings:

  • must be of the full human figure
  • should be loose/ not tight and detailed
  • should have accurate figure proportions
  • should be at least 7” tall. You may use multiple pieces of paper
  • should be done in pencil
